Travels with William eBook Mugoux Reviews

I like to read travel books so this came up in my filtered search. Look! They traveled to Crete... I've been to Crete.... and a lot of other places in Greece (me too!) so I ordered Travels With William. But this is so much more lessons and contemplation of Greek Mythology, scenes from a marriage (occasional reminiscent of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"), spot-on character descriptions of the people they meet along the way and depictions of magical places that make me want to go there, now! Speaking of Now, I love how Mugoux describes her need to Be Here Now and how elusive it is. This is more than a travelogue, much more.
Ever wonder about the personality of artists’ women, for example, Fernande Olivier, or Olga Khokhlova, two of Picasso’s wives and multiple mistresses, or Hendrickje Stoffels, Remembrandt’s servant girl? Although it must be said that there is not such a thing as an “artist’s personality,” there nevertheless is something down right strange about those willing to commit themselves totally to their art to the exclusion of all other involvements. Maguoux tells her story of just such a relationship. This tender-sweet, exasperating experience on the shores of the Greek mediterranean includes many stereotypical personalities most readers are quite familiar with, as a discourse on the persistence of La Boheme. You’ll enjoy it.
This story is fun to read. It's lighthearted, funny, serious and willing to grab the reader to get to the next excursion or townscape. After reading this I'm ready to get to Greece and feel that I can generally know what to expect. Mugoux gives an enlightening insight about her relationship with William which truly gives meaning to the phrase, "It takes two to tango." I can see why they moved to South America!
I just read this book - it was funny and enlightening - lots of "A-ha's".

You might think that this is a travel essay book - I did at first. But a little way into it I realized it's not that at all. Well maybe a little bit. What I enjoyed most about the book was experiencing the couple's relationship.

They seem to use their relationship and a trip to Greece as a path to enlightenment - and the honesty and straightforwardness of their conversations are, I think, what's missing in a lot of relationships - not just marriages.

I found their willingness to say whatever to each other and really listen and "get" each other very refreshing. The result is a tenderness and freedom not easily found these days - whether you're talking about a relationship of 2 people or 2 nations - we could really use more of this kind of communication on the planet.

I was at the west coast book launch in Seattle - at a cool Pioneer Square art gallery called ArtXchange. According to the author this is the first book in a series. She has plans to use her relationship with her husband to explore transformation, synchronicity, and manisfestation. Hey, I'm all ears - and eyes (which will be watching for the next book).
This book inspires me to live life to it's fullest and find humor along the way. A great summer read or anytime read for that matter, when you're wanting to daydream of far away places and spirited adventures.
Mugoux writes of a vulnerable search for self realization with in this love story. Vivid with exquisite settings and fabulous humor.
I was alternately charmed and alarmed as I followed the Grecian journey of these creative free spirits. And a little envious. Their adventures and misadventures are not for the faint of heart. Great dialogue - part bickering, part affectionate - as this couple negotiated the language, customs and social dynamics of Greece. Woven throughout is intelligent commentary on art, history, literature, landscape and much more. It did make me want to travel to Greece, but in a more sober and well managed manner as suits my pedestrian soul.
