Byron Wesley King (1856 - 1924) was my grandfather, so I believe that I'm qualified to comment on The Practice of Speech with the inside-perspective of family lore. Dr. King was born on a farm in upstate New York, and as a child had a serious speech impediment. Through what we today call "self help," he overcame his problems and went on to receive a PhD in English Literature, as well as to become one of the most acclaimed Shakespearian actors and dramatists of his era. Dr. King then transformed his successful stage efforts into a private school for theater and music in turn-of-the-century Pittsburgh.

The Practice of Speech is one of several books that Dr. King wrote to help his students -- and others who could not attend the King School -- improve their powers of speech and elocution. It's a series of lessons and drills, sort of like calisthenics and muscle-memory for your vocal cords. There are basic phonetic drills, progressing upwards to complex and tongue-twisting speaking challenges.

The content of the book may be over a century old. By definition, the literary selections are dated. But at the same time, the lessons in the book are timeless. That is, the human body and vocal cord layout has not evolved in 100 years. So the same vocalization drills that benefited Dr. King's students in the early 1900s can still be useful today.

I grew up in a household where my grandmother (Dr. King's widow) and father (his son) both emphasized the utility of public speaking. We had many original, well-thumbed copies of The Practice of Speech on our bookshelves, and often read passages aloud to each other as we sat around the living room.

Perhaps you just have to give an office-report every now and again. Or maybe you want to go to Hollywood and be a movie star. If you want to improve your ability as a public speaker, you can still benefit from the exercises laid out by Dr. King. I also recommend the book to students and teachers of corrective speech.

Beyond the utilitarian aspect of The Practice of Speech, as a means to improve one's speaking ability, the book is also a time machine. Perusing The Practice of Speech lets a modern reader peer back into the literary world-view of a well-educated man at the beginning of the 20th Century. In that sense, it's a piece of classic Americana.
